Lifelong Formation

Adult Confirmation

Whether you have been asked to be a godparent or a sponsor, are looking forward to celebrating your marriage in the Catholic Church, or are simply seeking a deeper relationship with God through learning from and following Jesus Christ, the journey towards celebrating the Sacrament of Confirmation is a time for spiritual awakening and renewal! The call to live out the promises of our Baptism as adult disciples of Christ can come in many ways and through many different promptings. Answering the call means opening our hearts and our lives to the Lord, recognizing His Voice, and allowing the power of the Holy Spirit to guide us on life’s pathways.

“For by the Sacrament of Confirmation, [the baptized] are more perfectly bound to the church and are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit. Hence, they are, as true witnesses of Christ, more strictly obliged to spread and defend the faith by word and deed.” (LG 11; cf. Rite of Confirmation, Introduction 2)

The Archdiocese of Chicago, through the Office of Lifelong Formation, offers Adult Confirmation preparation classes in the spring and fall. Classes are currently offered virtually.

Please note, you must be 18 years of age or older and have completed the Catholic sacraments of Baptism and Holy Communion.

Getting Started

As you prepare for Confirmation, we encourage you to:

  • Reflect on how God has been present in your life in the past, and how He is now inviting you to a deeper, more meaningful relationship.

  • Begin to notice any daily encounters with God. If you haven’t already, start taking time each morning or evening for prayer.

  • Attend a Sunday Mass and pray with your local community. (If you haven’t received the graces of the Sacrament of Confession in a while, check your local parish website for times and consider experiencing the healing power of forgiveness!)

  • If you belong to a Catholic parish, introduce yourself to a priest or staff member. Share with them your decision to enter the Confirmation process. Let your fellow parishioners join you on your journey through their prayers.
