Human Dignity and Solidarity

Impact

CCHD Committee member Sanetta Jackson reflects on her experience at Senior Power 2017, organized by the Jane Addams Senior Caucus.

Many people see senior citizens as feeble, weak, powerless has-beens who are not capable of standing up for their rights. But, Jane Adams Senior Caucus has re-defined and changed the look of that picture. The sanctuary was full. More than 300 senior citizens from across Chicagoland representing all neighborhoods and socio-economic groups gathered at the Chicago Temple to demand that their elected officials stand for dignity and justice. The clarion call went forth for economic, social and racial justice for all. Through chants such as “Healthcare is a human right, now’s the time that we must fight!” and “Hey, congress what do you say? Social security is here to stay!” The message was clear “Seniors Vote” and politicians better listen. Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky participated in this grassroots event proving that she stands in solidarity with senior power. Congressman Danny K. Davis sent a letter of support which was read by his congressional aide. All-in-all this event was highly successful and made a poignant statement about the power of seniors.

September 2017

Congratulations to CCHD grantees Chicago Worker Collaborative, Latino Union, Arise Chicago, and Centro de Trabajadores Unidos on this victory!

This new law requires staffing agencies to…

  • report demographic information about the workers they hire;
  • never charge workers for background checks, drug tests, and credit checks;
  • notify temp workers about the types of equipment, protective clothing and training needed to perform the job as a means to reduce workplace injuries;
  • provide transportation back from a job site if transportation was provided to the job site; and
  • place their temporary workers into permanent positions if such positions become open.
