Become an Amate House Volunteer!
Thank you for your interest in Amate House. We are now accepting applications for our 35th group of Amate House Volunteers who will serve during the 2018-2019 year.
Our Volunteer application consists of three stages. Follow the link for each stage to be directed to that portion of the application.
Stage One (Link)

- Personal Statement (completed online)
After you submit the Basic Background Information + Personal Statement, a recruiter will contact you to set up a 20-45 minute Q & A phone or skype call.
- Short Answer Responses (completed online)
- Resume (emailed as separate attachment to firstname.lastname@example.org)
- Character References (references will submit form directly to email@example.com)
After you submit the Short Answer Responses + Resume + Character References, we will set up a formal interview with you. An in-person interview in Chicago is strongly preferred.
Stage Three – Site Placement Process
Once you have confirmed with Amate House, we will send you a list of job descriptions for a variety of service sites based on your career interests. Once you choose your top three options, we will set up interviews and then follow up afterwards to confirm the site placement. Our staff works very hard to ensure both you and the service site feel the placement is a good match.

The purpose of the Amate House Handbook is to inform Volunteers and prospects about our program’s values, charism and policies. Our hope is that all Amate House Volunteers will enter their year of service with a willingness to grow, share and serve. The contents of this handbook are meant to provide some “best practices” for the Volunteer experience. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns about any of the information included in this document.
Thank you for your interest in experiencing service and community during your week of service with Amate House. We hope that the week you will be joining us will be a faith filled, enriching experience. Here at Amate House we strive to make sure each group that would like to volunteer with us can do so during their desired time. To make sure this happens, we ask that you fill out the attached service agreement and send it back to Amate House as soon as possible. Amate Houses are in the Chicago neighborhoods of McKinley Park and Little Village. Our houses are former convents, occupied by current full-time post graduate Volunteers. The Amate House Volunteers live in a community based on the values of faith, service, social justice and stewardship. Groups are invited to participate in our communities during their visit by joining in reflection and in sharing meals. You may also opt out of our community building activities should you prefer. Groups should bring sleeping bags, pillows and shower items. We are not able to provide beds for sleeping, so all groups will be sleeping on the floor.
Our housing is limited to 12 people per group, including chaperones.
Amate House will provide all meals for participants from money paid before the trip. A continental breakfast and food for bagged lunch will be made available. Dinner will be prepared by the Amate House Volunteers.
Amate House Volunteers practice simple living; therefore, meals are simple, but sustainable. Please encourage your participants to experience living simply during their week of service. If your group is planning on going out to dinner one evening instead of eating with the Volunteers, please let us know ahead of time so we can plan accordingly. Prior to arrival, we will arrange a menu for the week.
Amate House Staff and Volunteers are willing to plan your service experience. Please let us know if you would like your trip to have a theme or focus.
We will work to the best of our ability to plan service opportunities, but keep in mind that we are dependent on the service sites that are available. Please note that much of the work done by short-term groups is indirect in nature—stocking pantries, cleaning and painting, etc. We try to the best of our ability to provide your group with a variety of direct and indirect services. Please note that we are not able to rearrange or change your service site schedule once you are here, unless there is an emergency.
The cost for our Urban Immersion experience is $40 per person, per night. This price includes food, lodging and agenda. One third of your trip cost is due at the time you book your trip and will reserve your spot with us. The remainder of the cost will be due 10 weeks before your group arrives. If you plan your own services, the cost is $35 per night.
Up until six months before your trip your deposit is refundable except for a $50 service fee. After six months, a refund is only issuable if a replacement group is secured. Any cancellations, or amendments to the length of stay or size of group, less than 8 weeks prior to your arrival will be non-refundable. In the event of severe weather-related cancellations, your group will receive a 50 percent reimbursement. This reimbursement amount is meant to reflect the time and resources put in by Amate House staff for your group’s original planned trip.
