The Mary, Mother of Mercy Parish Director of Music Ministry is a faith-filled person who holds credentials in music and has a thorough understanding for and appreciation of the Roman Catholic liturgy. In the “building the new reality” stage of Renew My Church, the Director of Music Ministry at Mary, Mother of Mercy works to bring the parishioners closer to God through the ministry of music, uniting and engaging the parish community. He/she works to recruit, train and support people with differing levels of musical ability and within differing forms of worship. This person is responsible for the effective planning, coordination, and execution of music within the liturgical celebrations of the parish, overseeing both worship sites. The ideal candidate should be proficient in piano and organ; and can direct the choirs and cantors in both English and Spanish.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Schedule liturgical music for all Sunday masses.
  • Recruit and rehearse with adult, school and children’s choirs.
  • Provides liturgical formation, music education, and practical preparation for liturgical celebrations for those involved in the music ministry of the parish.
  • Supervise and assist all cantors in leading music for weekend liturgies.
  • Work with the parish staff and school principal to ensure that there is inclusive, appropriate music for school liturgies, family masses, and sacramental celebrations.
  • Attend monthly staff meetings.
  • Ensure that the sound system and instruments are working properly and maintained.

Job Requirements:

  • Is knowledgeable and comfortable with Church music literature in all forms and styles for the congregation, choirs, vocalists, and instrumentalists.
  • Has a thorough understanding of the musical, liturgical, and pastoral judgments which must be made in selecting music for liturgy within both English-speaking and Spanish-speaking communities.
  • Is proficient in at least one performance area (keyboard, choral, voice, guitar)
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Fluent in Spanish and English

  • Liturgy

    • Conducts the St. John Berchmans School choir (August-May)
  • Administration
    • Manages, schedules and supervises all paid cantors, choir section leaders, and music volunteers, and hires additional musicians for special occasions as necessary
    • Designs worship aids or booklets as necessary
    • Participates as a full member of the St. John Berchmans staff by working collaboratively with the pastor, school principal, director of operations, director of faith formation and education and by attending staff meetings, liturgy committee meetings and other events as necessary
    • Coordinates, trains and forms liturgical ministers (lectors, EMHCs and servers)

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in music or liturgy; master’s degree preferred
  • Strong organ, piano, and vocal skills
  • Comprehensive knowledge and love of Catholic liturgy, music and tradition
  • 3-5 years of experience in church music (may include part-time service); 5+ years preferred
  • Experience in or ability to facilitate bilingual liturgies in English and Spanish; bilingual and/or bicultural preferred

Tenor for Sanctuary Choir – part time

Our thirty-voice choir is a talented and capable ensemble adept at singing the great chant of our Church and living composers of our time.   • Have a workable familiarity with a variety of present day hymnals (both Catholic and Protestant)
  • Be present and functioning at the full schedule of weekend liturgies
